Women in translations, ep. 2

Do you know George Eliot?

The second woman in our series #womenintranslation is George Eliot. Considered as one of the greatest Victorian authors, she had to use a masculine pen name to be taken seriously. Her first translations were ‘The Life of Jesus’ by David Friedrich Strauss and ‘The Essence of Christianity’ by Ludwig Feuerbach. Pretty ironic for an agnostic, don’t you think ? Then she devoted herself to writing. The foreword to ‘Sayings’ (a compilation of her most beautiful sayings, published in 1871) is a testimony to her work: “George Eliot has done for the Novel what Shakespeare did for the Drama.”
